Although the current Bulldog type have been modernized exterior very regularly, there are still many features of its appearance, which dates back to the original Bulldog. In many countries, particularly in England, it was to let dogs compete against the bulls in the century a sport that many took part in with great interest. In England, these contests were so popular that they are referred to as one of the time national sports. When these exactly started to organize these events in England, is not known. But the old notes and writings, talks about why these traditions were brought back in 1209th. Heigh demands were expected on the dogs originally used. They should be mentally strong and have plenty of courage and they had to be muscular and in possession of very many forces to go up against a big, heavy and furious bull. There were not particularly high demands on its appearance. The most suitable dogs for the purpose, was the time butcher dogs that descended from Anglo large, wide, heavy and wide foot end contrary dogs. This type of dog belonged to the same group of large Dogger which existed in Central Europe in prehistoric times. Anglo-Saxons had taken them to to Britain, and these dogs have probably helped to eradicate the original inhabitants and displace them from large parts of the current England so that the original Celtic population is now found only in the remote areas of Wales and Scotland.

In 1209 as Earl Warren, the then Lord of Stamford, two bulls fight each other on the grass outside the castle. The fight was interrupted when all the town's butcher dogs came running, and walked away at one of the guides. The many dog chased the raging bull through the town. This sight amused lord so much that he years that followed, held annual events with a battle between a dog and a bull for fun for the city's upper class citizens, and to delight and benefit of the city's butchers against making bulls and dogs available, were they allowed to visit the castle meadow free once a year. They would however guarantee that the dogs were very vicious and aggressive.
Gradually these events went to be an established tradition as it was spread out all over England. It has been found among other descriptions of how a bull fight went on held in Tutbury in Staffordshire in the 1375th.The dogs used for these matches were of very different origins. The first real in-depth description of the dogs come from year 1410, and is given by Edward, Duke of York, he called the dogs Alaunter. Only much later it was named Bulldog, as they are known as today. The name Bulldog was mentiont in a letter in 1631/1632.

They showed them at pubs for the audience and took pride in keeping the breed pure breed.
